Twelve Japanese officers and 136 nion were killed and 47 officers mid 848 men wounded at the battle of Ta-chi-chiao. General Oku estimates the Russian casualties were at least 2000. SAKHAROFF'S STATEMENT.. IN EXTENUATION OF THE DEFEAT. LONDON, August 1. General SakharolT, in reply to the Japanese estimate cabled on July 28th, deck red that the Russians participating in the operations at Ta-chi-chiao were fewer than represented. They abandoned the position because they found they would bo unable to accept battle next 'morning while defending a front extending over 16 kilometres (nearly ten miles). He adds that the abandonment surprised the Japanese. GRUMBLING RUSSIAN TROOPS. DO NOT LIKE CONTINUAL MARCHING—BACKWARD. LONDON, August 1. The Russian troops are grumbling over the constant retreat to mountainous country which renders the transport of the wounded difficult Many of the latter are obliged to walk. RUSSIA'S SOUTHERN FRONT. CLOSELY BESET BY JAPANESE FORCES. (Received August 1, 11.59 p.m.) LONDON, August 1. General Sakharofl reports that the Japanese are now concentrating ]»rge ' forces on the Russian southern front. BATTLE IN PROGRESS. HAI-CHENG ARMY'S RIGHT FLANK ATTACKED. (Received August 2, O.ij] n .m.) LONDON, August 1. Japanese infantry have attacked the night flank of the Hai-cheng army, under cover of artillery. At latest reports the battle was ' still in progress. •
