Egmont County Council
At a special meeting of the Eomont County Council on Monday there were present :-Crs. Forsyth (chairman), Maxwell, Shaw, Coffin Stevenson, Rotary, Bu , gess> c ' erk announced the election of co/hn to fill the vacancy caused bj the resignation of Cr. Byrant. I Cr. Maxwell, in accordance with notice given, moved that this council declares the Parihaka Road district meii god m the Egmont county. Cr. Shaw seconded, and after a long discussion the motion wus carried, to be confirmed at a meeting to be held on the 29tl> August, 'lhe question of taking legial advice the several points raised «as then considered, when it was eventually deuded to allow those who were opposed to the merging to prove that it was wrong-. i J h \?i ldinary nu ' 6ti «S "'as then then held. The Bank of New Zealand wrote regarding charges to local todies, a Rd further, stating that the council could draw to the extent of £lß7l at "ii per cent, interest. Ihe Auditor-General notilied that the separate rate in the Oeo riding could not lie pledged for overdraft. It was resolved that the bank be communicated with, and 'informer) that the urgent requirements of the council necessitate a greater advance by way oi overdraft than the amount mentioned in its letter of Kith inst., and request the bank to allow the Council to overdraw to the estent of £2ooo at 5A per cent. Mr A. McKeown, who waited on the council, was informed that the Hone road will be attended to when the council has funds for the work. The Valuation Department wrote that the new rolls would l>e forwarded in a few days. A letter was read from the Land and Income Tax Department stating that the subsidy of 1902-3' on Parihaka Road fioard rates, amounting to £125, had been paid to the Taranaki County Council. Resolved that the Taranaki Council be requested to send a credit note for amount as part payment of adjustment account. The Public Trustee, wrote stating that demand for native rates would be looked into and cheque forwarded. it was resolved that the cIeTK notify Mr Scanlon to keep Ms pigs oft Kiri road, and repair damage done by them, and the same procedure be adoptod in all cases of trespass and damage by pigs. Resolved that J. Twomey ro-.eive seven days' notice to proceed with his contract or that same will be forfeited. The foreman reported being engagchiefly on repairs during the month. He advised strengthening Tongapou bridge, near M a nihi road, at an estimated cost of £9 10h. The foreman was authorised to strengthen Tongapou bridge. In accordance with notice given, Cr. Maxwell moved that the resolution passed at meeting held oil the 10th June, 1904, be altered', by striking out the words "within the limits of the coastal boundary of the county," and substituting therefor the words, "for the Opunake bay, and as much of tho foreshore north and south of the bay as the (JovernoiMnCouncil may lit." In moving the amendment he said that possibly the motion, as originally passed, might look too grasping and a wronjr impression lie created, us a certain number were under the idea that it meant the formation of a harbour district, including the whole county, which was not at all the intention of the original motion. Cr. Stevenson seconded' and the amending resolution was curried. Accounts amounting to £2IS) 15s 8d Mere paswui for payment. Cr. Maxwell was authorised to sien cheques in (he absence of Cr. Dudley.
Final demand will bo made on .J. McCullum for damage to Warea bridge, and if not paid in fourteen days that ho bo sued for amount. Cr. Maxwell moved that as there was a doubt about whether the rate should be struck on the old roll or on the new valuation, that the opinion of "Mr Martin, solicitor 1o the Counties Conference, should be obtained on the point.—Seconded by Cr. fthaw and carried.—Abridged from Opunake Times.
