The rehearsal of La Mascotto last evening was a brilliant one, and the public who aro fond of opera will be afforded a special treat on August --irti and 4th. A professional witness of last evening's rehearsal declared, that from a musical standpoint it equalled, if not surpassed, anything he had ever witnessed. The club is sparing no expense in its efforts to
sill-pass anything yet attempted locally by amateurs. It has been sue-' cessful in securing £195 worth of scenery, etc., of exceptional merit, and there is no doubt the eftortsi of the members will be rewarded by a bumper house.

The Garrison Hand has arranged ioY a torchlight procetsion from G over-street to tho Theatre Hoyal, playing along tho line of march, prior to the concort. At the liawera Hospital Board's last meeting the following letter was received from tho Taranaki Board : " Please find enclosed account for your men in the Old People's Home. The cowt to this board has been 16b per week, and your board having only paid 10s per week, are now liable to the balance (6s) as per agreement." The. Chairman said the claim camo as a great surprise to him. The arrangement made upon tho separation of this district was that we should pay 10s per week until the actual cost was ascertained, but it was thought that sum woufd be the outside cost. Tt was then estimated that from 8s to 10s would bo ample. He took exemption to several of the charges made, and thought an advantage was being taken of an agreement that was made in good faith. In the statement) the sum set down for provisions would work out at about, 5b (id per head, which meant that another 10s fid was charged for the upkeep of the institution. Mr Wilkic said the whole charge was undoubtedly in accordance with the arrangement made. What they had to decide was whether tho charges were reasonable ; if not they should he struck out. It would he as cheap to , board the men out, as to pay His per head per week for their maintenance in the home. After discussion it was resolved, "That this board »i----press surprise at ihe cost, of maintenance, seeing that it whs considered that the extreme limit would be His, and that Messi'M Scott anil Robbins be a committee to meet the members of tho New Plymouth Board to discuss tho matter." It was thought that if correspondence wus commenced ill-feeling might be stirred up, whereas by an interview an amicable arrangement might be made without difficulty.
Tho disputed payment for patients sent from Eltham to the New Plymouth hospital recently, came up for discussion at tho last meeting of the Ilawera Hospital and Charitable Aid Hoard. Messrs Clovett and Quilliam, solicitors to tho Taranaki Hospital ■inrl Charitable Aid Board, wrote as follows "Your letter of May 19th refusing to pay for the maintenance in tho New Plymouth hospital of two patients from tho Eltham district, has been handed to us. Wc are now instructed to inform you that falling payment of the amount forthwith wo shall bo obliged to take proceedings for its recovery." Tho Chairman said members wero aware that an Eltham doctor had token it upon himself to send tho patients to New Plymouth without authority from tho Ilawera Hoard. When the Now Plymouth hospital authorities applied to the Ilawera Board for payment tho board declined to admit any responsibility. When the New Plymouth hospital discharged the patients they should have made an effort to secure payment before levying upon tho Ilawera lioard. Mr Boddio sadd tho men in this case wero both quite willing to pay, and ho did not see why tho New Plymouth authorities should try to mako tho Ilawera Board do their work. While it was true that the patients were living in this district at tho time, one of them at. least had his residence and friends in New Plymouth, and wont there at his own expressed desire. Tho patient", were not paupers, and the New Plymouth Board had taken a very high-handed action. Mr Wilkio said the New Plymouth Board had no claim upon the Tlawera Board until they proved that the patients wero paupers. It was decided that the New Plymouth lioard be informed thnt that this board declines to admit any liability, and that the patients referred to are tho proper persons to npply to for payment.—Star.
