j (From Our Correspondent.) I The various athletic bodies are taking keen interest in preparing the camp reserve for recroatiori purposes. The Caledonian Society took the lead, and already a scheme has been . devised for the formation of a good track for next season's sports gath- , e*ing. The Waitara Cricket Club met on Friday evening to discuss the natter. Mr Knight was in the chair, and explained the object of the meet- [ ing. Mr Andrews was the first speaker in favour of using the camp reserve as a match and practice ground, whilst Mr Purdie urged that the club should continue on its present pitch for the coming Sieason, and in the meantime prepare a ground on the reserve. The matter of difficulty with footballers, who would perhaps spoil the pitch, was introduced by the chairman, who advocated making two separate grounds for these sports. After some further discussion, during which a speaker urged the formation of a Domain

The meeting formed itself into a ! committee to visit and inspect the i ground, and probably to work, for i all the labour will have to be voluntary. Tiie Clifton Football Club met on Monday to discuss the matter, and appointed Messrs T. Buchanan and H. Matthews to meet representatives of kindred societies in order to de- ; cide on joint action in preparing the i ground for sport of various kinds, : the report of the conference to be i submitted to the Town Hoard. The latter body will 'be requested to appoint a Domain Board, comprising ing two representatives each from the Town Board, Football Club, Cricket Club and Caledonian Society to administer the ground. The Waitara Rifles have made arrangements for their annual camp. The moil are not over jubilant about it, for the climatic conditions now prevailing are not tho best for outdoor work. On Thursday afternoon the New Plymouth companies intend attacking Fort Waitara, which will bo defended by our hoys in khaki. Seeing that there are likely to be hot encounters in the rough country around, it is understood that secret orders have been issued to make this one of Mr Ilooley's " dimonsthrashuns." The s.s. She is expected to arrive in the roads-lead on Wednesday. The local musical society, assisted by performers from New Plymouth and elsewhere, is to give a concert next week. The society lias some really good talent amongst its members. The monthly sitting or ihe S.M. Court took place, on Monday, Mr Hutchison, S.M., presiding. The only civil case was that of Wyllie. Sloti and Co. v. Minehin, judgment, summons, on a claim of £3 Bs. .Judgment was for ihe plaintiffs, an order being made for payment of the amount in a week, or in default, seven days' imprisonment. Henry Pawnnrook was convicted and ordered to pay the costs of the prosecution on a charge of having obtained liquor for u prohibited person. Till! facts were that the prohiblted person was 0110 Kurailiana To Tupe, who had told the accused the brandy was for his sick wife, Pnwnarook being unaware that he wa« breaking the law. The native, , vh() [ is a member of the Maori Council was charged with having requested the previous defendant to get the brandy u lso pleaded ignorance ot the law, but was convicted and ordered to pay costs. Constable liealtie conducted the cases.
