When the launch capsized he was the only occupant, and was under the covering, with one hand on the fly-wheel to start the engine when the boat was suddenly carried over. The oflicer was thrown against the side and carried down with the sinking boat. He eventually got free, and pulling oil his overcoat and mulller, struck out for the shore, but finding he could not get through the breakers swam out, and was rescued 'by vhe ship's boat. He was much exhausted, but is about again, though a few days' rest is necessary. Tho Herald reached Gisborne at 9 p.m. and left for south at 11.
