STRATFORD HOSPITAL HILL. Mr E, M. Smith, M.H.R., and Mr |r. Cock (Mayor of New Plymouth) yesterday arranged with the Chairman of tho Local Bills Committer to, on next sitting day, receive n joint deputation of bodies objecting to the Stratford Hospital Bill. THE PAIH'ATUA ELECTION, The election campaign is proceeding at I'ahlatua. Four candidates spoke last night in different parts of the electorate. Mr Buick speaks at Pahiatua on Monday night. Mr iltoese to-day announced his retirement in favour of Mr Buick, who has been selected as the Government candidate. Some expect that Mr Crewe will also retire. A number of Now ZoaJand Alliance representaI lives are making n house-to-house canvass on behalf of Mr Hawkins, the prohibition candidate, LEGISLATIVE COUNCILLORS. Hon. James Carroll on Thursday night said that out of the forty-live membera of the Legislative Council, twenty-seven had been members of the House of Representatives, one had been a member of the House of Commons, four of them had been Mnyj urn, four were labour representatives, I and fivo representatives: on local bodies, and two had been in the House for about thirty years. THE GOVERNMENT WHIP. TW» seatß of four Ministers were vacant on Thursday—thoso of the Premier, Postmaster-General, the Minister for Public Works and the Minister for Customs. The debate on the Legislative Council Reform Bill had considerably slackened after a discussion extending over several hours, when Mr A. L. D. Eraser, speaking from the Premier's seat, defended the Government from Opposition attacks in regard to appointments to the Legislative Council. This led to several speakers complimenting tho member for Napier In qualifying for a position which was soon to bo filled, and they pointod to IMr Frasor as tho new Government Whip.—N.Z. Times.
A MISSING ORDER PAPER. A departmental inquiry »as been held into the late arrival of the Supplementary Order Paper in the House of Representatives last Wednesday when Mr Gamble, overseer at the Government Printing Office, was suspended. As a result of the inquiry Mr Gamble has been reinstated
