The Rarawa sailed from Onehunga for New Plymouth at 3.30 p.m. yesterday, passing the heads at 5.10. Favoured with fine weather, the Salvaging of the P. and 0. Australte (wrecked off Port Phillip Heads) is proceeding briskly. The fittings and cabin furniture have all been taken out. The cargo is coming out very wet, nearly everything being below water.
The steamer Moresby arrived at Norfolk Island on Friday. She ex.perienced heavy weather and lost one Of tire boats. She called at Lorxl Howe Island where a quantity of kauri timber was washed ashore. It is supposed to be part of the deck; cargo of a New Zealand vessel. j Mr Watson, Federal Premier, states there is no truth in the statement that tile white labour conditions in connection with the contracts will be modified. The tenders are advertised for the new English mail service to Mel- \ bourne. It will be alternative fortnightly v?ith the P. and O. service, I arranged by the Imperial Aovern-. inent. Thr contract will be for three years from January 3ist next. It gives Several alternate services—the first: an option between Australia and, some Mediterranean port, the second similar, with ail undertaking to call at Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane, «pd the tliird from any port of Australia to any port in England. This' permits the Cape route to be used.! The fourth alternative is from Syd-' aey or Brisbane to Vancouver. In none of these is there a stipulation regarding the carriage of refrigerat-; ed produce, but in the fifth, a tender 1 . which .covers any of the above routes, there is an additional condition for refrigerating space. No modification in regard to white crews is made. i
