THE NEW STEAMEHS. At the last annual nieetinf* of tho Northern Steamship Company it was intimated in the directors' v report that it was their intention' to build three new steamers to meet the demand of tho company's steadily increasing business. It has been now decided that two of tho now stonmer» will be twin-screw vessels, and the other ono single-screw. Mr Glow, the company's superintending engineer, ds at present busy with the plans and specifications for, the new vessels, ami purposes leaving Auckland on August Ist, travelling via Sydney to Britain, where it is probable the contract for tho now steamers will bo placed with one of the Scottish builders to complete, Mr Gow remaining in the Old Country to supervise their construction and equipment. The twin-screw steamers will to each of the following dimensions Length, 145 ft ; broadth, 27ft; depth', 10.3 moulded; tonnage, 850 gross. The type of the 1 steamer will 1m; on the flush-deck principle, with a top-gallant foreoistle, and schooner-rifjged. There will l>e two holds, one each fore and aft of tlie machinery space, with steam-winches at each hold for handling of cargo. A shadiMleck will extend from aft for three-fourths of the vessel's length, on top of which will bo the master's house and srlivrBetween the shade and main decks will be a steel deck-house in which will be provided a diningsaloon, pantry, bar, etc., together with berthing accommodation and smoking-room for gentlemen. lielow tho deck-house will bo the ladtos' cabin. Forward, accommodation will be provided for second-class passengers. Tho accommodation for officers will be arranged just aft of the machinery, bulkheads, and 'tween decks.
The single-screw vessel is to be. 105 ft long by 21ft broad, ojkl Oft deep, moulded, and is to be of the quarter-deck typo, with tho bridge amidships, and topgallant forecastle for tho crew. This vessel will l>e about 200 tons gross register, anjl I the rig arrangements of holds, etc., will be similar to the twin-screw design. Accommodation is provided for gontlemen iu the tjuortor-'aft deck and for ladies under tho bridge-deck amidships. Tlw master and officers will havo rooms on the port side of the bridge-deck. Tlio steermg-fbtridge will be at the forward end of the bridge-deck, All three vessels are to be fitted with electric light, steam steeringgear, and the most approved sanitary services.—Herald.
