Education Board.

The. Education Board met on Wednesday, Present—Messrs E. ti. Allsworth (chairman), Adlnm, McDonald, Wadd Mackay, Monkhousc, and Fuull. Mrs Dougherty apologised for hoi' ■absenvx*. Leave was granted, also to Mr Morton. i —Central School.— The following tenders were received for re-instating the Central School : —.l. Salt £503, L. Steele £455, Al. Andrews £454, A. Cliff £517, Boon llros. £4l9—The tender of Boon Bros, hud been accepted. —Tilt Secretary.— Leave of absence was granted to Mr Wildlconvhe, the secrelury, on account of illness. —Arciiitivt's Heport.— The architect's report was rcceiv*dt —Action Approved.— The. action of Messrs Faull and Wade, in the absence of the cluiiriiuiii, in the matter of the Central School lire, was approved. —Thanks.— The thanks of the board were tendered to the trustues of St. Andrew's Hall for placing their hall at tihe disposal of the board, and to the New Plymouth Fire Brigade for its services at the Central School

—Chairman's Report.— The chairman reported regretting the oMsence of the secretary. Commissioners had been appointed in those places which had failed to appoint committees. Classes at the Stratford Technical School were being' well attended, and sanction for Vwlditional classes was applied for. Owing to the Central School tiro the technical classes at New Plymouth hud teen delayed, but early action would be taken as soon as repairs had been effected. The architect hopwl to be able to submit to the next meeting of the Finance Committee plans for the proposed technical school at New Plymouth. Arrangements for the teachers' winter school had 'been practically completed. He recommended that the solicitor's opinion on the truancy question be forwarded to the Minister for Education. With regard to the application for schools at Miaugarou and Matire, lie recommended that application be made to the department for the necessary funds to cover cost of erection of a school for sixty pupils at Mangaroa and forty at Alatire, to be worked as hull' time schools.—The report was adopted, —Finance Committee's licport.—

The Finance Committee reported having accepted tenders for painting schools and residence as lollows :—Bell Block, J. Bellringer, £23 ; Cardiff, E. S. and W. Heid, £lB 17s 4d ; Mangorei Lower, West and Sons, £7 6s -, Inglewood, Gilbert Bros., £l4 G» (kl ; Kent lioad bower, West and Sons, £(> ; Warea, Greenaway and Sons, £ls ;. Rahotu, Greenaway and Sons, £7 10s ; Oaonui, Greenaway and Sons, £4. 10s; Tataraimaka, Greenaway and Sons, £5. —Midday Recess.— Permission was granted Tor the WTiangamomona ami committees to reduce the midday recess to half an hour during the winter months. —Winter Holiday at Waitam The W'aitnra committee will lie informed that the school may be opened during a week of the'nrid-win-ter holidays and eloped for a week after the examination. —Various Matters.— The Ngaire committee wrote thnt the residence re,i|uirod overhauling, wot weather making it hardly fit to live in. New hat pegs and mats were roifuirod at the school. Other neexta wore scheduled, Mr Darker, on behalf of himself ami Mr Ilughson, commissioners at ltohotu, wrote asking for some assistance as the school fund was in debt. Messrs McMillan and Fralric, Stratford, forwarded qwotalionp re laying water service to the strallord school. The Waihi school committee aijked for assistance, in levelling the sch'ooligiround.

Tho Kaiaual committee, called attention to a wilfully broken window m tho residence, a smoky chimney in the school and want of paint. The whole of the foregoingi' letters wore referred to the Finance Committee. A letter from the W'hangamomona committee in answer to tho board's imjuiry in respect to the examination report, was received. The matter of clearing .gorso on tho school site at Pukearuho was left to the chairman. The letter of thanks from Mr E. F. Hemingway for recognition of his services in connection witJi tho Stratford technical school was received. Tho Waihi committee will be granted a £ for £ subsidy up to £ii for the erection of a shell or-shid. With regard to Mr Gilbert's offer to rent the school site at Pukearuho ho will bo informed that the board is| now advertising for a teacher. Mr Thompson will be informed that the board is anxious to keep open the Pukearuho school. Tho Waihi school committee will Ira informed that as there is a lack of Interest in tho school work on tho part of the. teacher the yjuestioii of his position will llife seriously considered after the next visit of the inspector. —Toko.— Messrs Monkhouso and Mnckay reported on the Toko school oul«'iiiildiirfgis', and on their recommendation it was decided to allow Mr Clarke to remove or dispose of shulp and material used in constructing them with the exception of any material supplied by the committee or by \iw board. New Schools.— The petition for a school in the Clieal road district and letters on the subject of a new school at Ivoihuratalii were referred to Messrs Monkhotise and Muckay for tl'ieir report. the Wlvungainoniona hall was aceedod to, and applications will be invited for a teacher for the new school. —Central School.— The Central School Committee will be informed that the board has made no exception in reglard to removing or appointing teachers to the school, and a copy of the inspector's memorandum will be foiv warded to the committee. The board will pay the claims of the Central School committee for losses sustained at the lire, and these will be forwarded to the department. —Travelling Allowances.— The sum of £f> travelling expenses was allowed the chairman. —Pupil-teachers' Regulations.— The suggested alterations in pupilteachers' regulations were referred to the inspector. —Mukahu.— Letters from Messrs Smith, Jennings, and Symcs, M.'sH.lt., regarding the school at Makahu are to be • acknowledged, and these gentlemen • will tie thanked for the great inter- > est they have taken in the matter. —Thanks.— Hearty votes of thanks were accorded to the inspectors for their ex- \ cellent reports on the district schools.
