The organising of the monster New Plymouth Christmas Carnival and Exhibition of Art and Industries proceeds apace. The Carnival Executive lias decided on its programme and has committees at work collecting information and doing general preparatory work, and very shortly will (lood the colony with literature pertaining to the Carnival in particular and the .historic and scenic attractions of the district in general. The Exhibition Committee has just emerged from its building dilemna, and has called tenders for the erection of a somewhat, pretentious edifice on St. AJichael's Stjiuire, the building to be in the form of a hollow square with an inner courtyard containing a band rotunda, ornamental gardens, tea kiosks, and other facilities and attractions, the space available for exhibitors being set down at -10,000 feet, though the buildings are so constructed that, should occasion demand it. any amount of additional space can be given. The schedules will soon be

ready for circulation, and from information wo havu gained should attract exhibitors from all parts of the colony. As tin; circular accompanying the plans sets out, this is an exceptional opportunity for advertisement, as there are. thousands of visitors passing through New Plymouth (luring the holiday season of the, year. The original iaea of holding a carnival to engage the attention of residents in Taranaki during the festive season lias been enlarged upon, until now we have attractions planned on a very large scale that must attract thousands of people to tlie town. The exhibition itself promises already to be a great success, and must be of immense advantage to New Plymouth and to Taranaki generally, it is with pleasure that we note the prominence thai is given to the dairying section, which should be largely 11 Hod, Taranaki having a great reputation for its butleifcproducing. Another phase that is to bo'specially attended to is the encouragement <x' school exhibits, a section that is very frequently overlooked in mailers of this kind though of vital importance and intense interest. tit' the other functions, which include Maori festivals, athletic and swimming sports, children's carnival uud marine excursions, we shall hear mora as the dal-

es of the lixturcs draw nearer, but already the attention of the people of many parts of the colony is turned in this iliriclioii. The main feature of the Carnival, however, is the Inhibition of Art and Industries, which it is proposed to keep open for three weeks or more, mcording to the amount of support forthcoming, and it is a pleasant duty to congratulate the committee on the generally sustained interest as evidenced by the large attendance at meetings. The public are in full synir palliy with the movement, and have helped in many ways, by making suggestions, ami subscribing to the guarantee fund most liberally. So thai with the efforts of tin energetic committie backed up by the assistance of a discerning populace who see great advantages to be reaped from a successful function, the exhibition arrangements should speedily and satisfactorily proceed.
