Presentation.
TO MH h. G. P. SPENCEIi. A surprise visit was paid to Mr L U. P, Spencur'B oilico on Wednesday by Messrs W. F. Brooking, C. Ahier i. Messenger, L. V, Sladden, Swing' Bond, Smart und Pikctt, tho object being tho presentation of an address and tea-service to Mi' Spencer, late sngineor to the New Plymouth Borough Council, on behalf o( tho builders, some of tho borough employees and friends of the recipient. Mr Brooking uctH] us S p o k osman und asked Jiis acceptance of an address und a silver tea-service and spoons, tho teapot being inscribed ■ ••Presented to L. G. P. Spencer by New Plymouth friends and wellwishers. May, 1904." Mr Brooking said that the gentlemen present had come as representing many residents more particularly those whose business had brought them into contact with Mr Spencer in his official capacity as borough engineer and inspector under the building by-laws. They wished to show their sympathy w th him in tho circumstances which led up to his resignation, and to usk liim to accept, with best wishes towards Mrs Spencer und himself the lea-service and tho following address :— '■ To Leonard Urunllev Paoli Spencer, Esq., A.M.1.C.K., London : M.I.C. and M.E, Licentiate Aluiucpal Surveyors, Victoria.—Dear Sir.— We, the builders, contractors, and others of New Plymouth, who have been brought into business contuct with you during your engagement with the council, desire, on your leaving the employment of the Now Plymouth llorough Council, to express to you our hearty approval of the manner in which you have carried out tho duties of engineer and building inspector of the borough during the two jeans you havd held those positions, and of tho confidence you have inspired in us of your atu'lily and conscientious regard for the duties of your office, to express our regret us ratepayers and 'burgesses at the municipality losing tho services of an able and valuable officer, and to ask your acceptance of the accompanying memento as a token of our good wishes. In conclusion, wo desire to wish you—which wo have no doubt Is in store for you—u prosperous and satisfactory career in your profession."
The address was signed by some twenty building nnd contracting firms and individuals, inclu.ling some borough employees who had served under Mr Spencer. In reply Mr Spencer said lie was unable to fully express his gratitude, especially for the kind terms of the address and manner In which Mr Brooking had referred to his work. That work included a much greater variety than generally came ' before an engineer, and much of it was required in a hurry. His work, he thought he hud a right to soy, was satisfactorily carried out, whilst amongst those with whom he had been connected in the execution of his duties hu numbered several wnim friends and memories of cordial relations. On behalf of his wife and himself ho wished to thank them heartily for the present, which he would value the more highly as among the signatories were several borough employees.
