An Auckland telegram slates that it is probable the Hon. Sir Alfred Cadman will bo nominated for the Speakership of the Legislative Council.
After a lengthy Cabinet meeting yesterday, Sir John See (Premier 01 New South Wales) last night issued a manifesto to his constituents announcing that lie does -not intend to seek re-election. He cites as the chief reason for his retiring from politics the unsatisfactory condition of his health.
Sir Joseph Ward and a party from Dunedin visited the. Cntlins district yesterday. They went into Tahokopu by conveyance, where .the settlers entertained Sir Joseph. He returns to Owalm, to-day, when Jio officially opens the extension of iho Cntlins River railway to Ralanui, and will he aflunvards entertained at a banquet.

There was a large and reprcsentar tive gathering at Bum-din yestemlny on the occasion of a wolcomo social to the Hev, Dr. Nisbot, who was on the previous day inducted lo the pastoral of the Presbyterian First Church. The ladies presented the new pastor wilh a handsome silk gown, and the congregation presented tho Rev. Dr. Watt, who had acted as Moderator, wilh a purse of sovereigns.
