FOOTBALL.
SOUTH TAHANAKIMATCHES. The second round of matches in the southern division commenced on Saturday in disagreeable weathor. Hawera and Opunake seniors met nt Hawern, and the local team won all the way through, the scores at tho conclusion standing : Hawera 15, Opunake 0. Blythe potted a goal in the first spell, and in the second round Douglas, Nicholas and Goodwin scored tries, ono of which wus converted.
Elthain and Waimate tried conclusions on the Eltham ground, and after a line exposition of the forward •gamo Waimate proved victorious by 9 to 6. The only score in the first spell was by McPikc, who crossed the line for Elthum. In tho second spell Nicholls scored for the home team, and Burke and Tauiu for the visitors, who also secured a goal from a penalty kick. Do Launay crossed the line for Eltham, but the try was not allowed, and Aloir's penalty goal was disallowed on account of tho ball touching an opponent's hand before crossing the bar. Okaiawa seniors defeated Pa tea at tho latter place by eight points to nil, after a close and interesting tfamo. Johnston and Sullivan scored trios, one being converted. The scores were put on in the last fifteen minutes. . In junior games, Patea forfeited to I Okaiawa, Waimate beat Eltham by 6 to 0, Opunake and Hawera drew with three points each. Waimate second juniors beat Hawera by 3 t<> nil, Hurley scoring a try. IN OTHER PLACES. At Dunedin, in senior football—Union (0) beat Zingari (3). Near the end of the game, which was played on greasy ground. King (Zingnri) tripped Kish (Union) nljout half-way. The referee awarded a penalty of u try, and ordered Hie tripper off the field. Thus Zingari was defeated the first time this season. Kaikorai beat Dunedin (1.4 to nil). Al-Irauibra beat University (9 to 3).
At Auckland—rarnell and SutbjurbJß, a draw : Newton (. r >) beat 1 Grafton (nil) ; North Shore ((5) beat Potisonby (3), At Ohristchurch—Albion (4) beat Sydenham (nil), Christchurch (42) bent Canterbury College (11), Merlvale (11) beat Old Hoys (nil).
At I'almcrston—Awahuri defeated Institute (3 to nil), Old Hoys beat Palmerston (14 to nil). The games were played on a very sloppy ground and amidst continual showers of rain. (Per Tress Association.) DUNEDIN, June 0. At a meeting of the Rugby Union the Zingari Club ap|*ealod against the try awarded by the referee in last Saturday's match against the Union Club. The referee reported that in his opinion the try would have been scored had King not trippod tho Union player. The appeal was 1 disallowed. King was disqualified for life, and Stewart and Adamson, captains respectively of (he Zingari (Richmond) and Knikorai Clubs, were distftmlilicd for one week for taking on a player instead of ono injured. ROUGH PLAY AT WANGANUI. A Press Association message from Wnnganui states that the senior football match Knierau v. Pirates, played on Saturday was extremely rough, ami a number of players were injured. Qimrtermnn was kicked in the stomach and removed to tlte hospital. He is in a bad way. Loveridge was kicked on the head, and dazed, and had to be carried off the Held. Holland sustained n cut over the right eye, necessitating several stitches. Mitchell had a broken band, and Mania had his knee injured. Thomson was stunned by a blow on tho bend, Ouscolt sustained a broken collarbone, and (here wero several other minor accidents. Six of the injured were Pirates, but most of their injuries wero due to tho vigorousness of their own players.
