The Daily News. THURSDAY, JUNE 2, 1904. TARANAKI A. AND P. SOCIETY.

The efforts to secure ten acres of the ! Prison Reserve for the use of the Taranaki Agricultural and Pastoral Society have proved unavailing. This is a distinct misfortune, as the locality is exceptionally well suited for tho purpose, being handy to the railway line and close to the town, without being near enough to become a nuisance to people in tho borough. The committee set up to consider the question of site will now have to turn its attention in some other direction. and will probably inquire into the matter of the proposed exchange of the society's sections in St. Germain Square for a portion of the municipal reserves now held by the Taranaki Jockey Club. It is Understood that other sites are under consideration, but it will readily lie seen that it is no easy matter to secur« from ten to twelve acres of level land on the outskirts of the town in handy proximity to the rafrway. Thin latter is a great consideration, not only for the general public, but also for exhibitors, since the carriage is such an important item in bringing stock and implements from other districts to be shown litre. The committee will, unless thero is some .strong possibility of having a new site available at an early date, have to consider tho question of holding the 1904 show on the present siowgroumls.y Thgy are certainly not the best that <fcan tie thought of, but are evidently the only suitable sections that otlir themselves at the present juncturijf and the society may have 'to be content with them for another year. Whatever the site, it is high time that the members of the society were in a position to know whether or not a show is to be held this year, and where ; and also for the committee to set vigorously to work to adopt some scheme that will make the show a little better than in the past. We cannot conceive that the matter of location is of such paramount importance that all other arrangements should liave been allowed to hang lire pending its settlement. But there is now some possibility of the general committee meeting, at least, and the further chance that something will be done.
