The automatic letter-dating machine has (says the Lyttelton Times) been introduced into the mail-room at the Christchurch General Postoffice. It is worked by a half-horse-power motor, and deals with six hundred and fifty letters in a minute. By the old hand-stamping process thirty letters a minute were considered quick work. The machine is an improvement by Mr Donald Hobertson, chief clerk in Wellington, on the American type. The improvements have done away with the endless band that used to earry the letters into the machine, and afford other facilities. A pallid and excited individual dashed into a public house, and in an agitated voice .gasped : "A glass of liquor, quick—a man has fallen outside and cut his head shockingly." The barman promptly poured out the liquor into a tumbler, which tho stranger clutched nervously, and emptied at once. Then he drew his hand across his eyes, sighed heavily, looked Into the face of the amazed dealer, and apologetically said, "The sight of blood always did make me sick." Ho then walked away, leaving the barman staring at the door.
