| THE TIMARIJ-CHRIBTCIIIUICH ROAD RACE. (Special to News.) ; CHRISTCHURCH f May tfl. The following prizes have been allotted b.v the Punlop Tyro Company for the Timaru-Christchurch Road Race, which takes place on July 10, to select New Zealand's representative for the Warrnambool—Melbourne First prize, motor cycle by Messrs Oates, Lowry, and Co. ; second, choice of Red Bird cycle or Hell cycle, debated respectively by the Canada Cycle and Motor Co., Ltd, and Messrs Bell Bros., Christchurch ; third prize, Bell cycle or Red Bird cycle, hot chosen by second competitor ; fourth, £(> 6s, given by the League of New Zealand Wheelmen and Mr T. Coverdale ; lifth» live guinea marble clock given by Messrs (Jrilson and Davis ; sixth, .CI 4s, given by the Christchurch Cycling and Motor Club, the Pioneer Cycling and Athletic Club, and the New Zealand Wheelman and Motor News ; seventh, «C 8 3s, given by Messrs Speight and Co., liunedin ; special prize, -cheque for £l2B 18s, and the Road Championship Cold Medal, valued at £5 ss, given by tho Dunlop Tyro Co. to the competitors establishing tho fastest time, such riders to represent New Zealand in tho Wnrrnambool-Melbourne Road llace in August ; special prize, a Rover cycle, donated by Messrs Inglis Bros.. Wellington, to the fastest competitor receiving fifteen minutes' start or over, not taking first., second, third, fourth, or fifth position, or the fastest time ; special prize, cheque for C 5 ss, given by Mr .J. B. Clarkson, Palnicrston North and' Christchurch, for the fastest time. In addition 1o the above special prizes the whole of the entry money will be given to the riders establishing the fastest times (excepting* the fastest competitor) at the rate of .CIS 15s each, in order that the colony may be represented in the Punlop W'arr-nambool-Melbourno Road Race by a team of tho fastest riders. These prizes will be awarded in order of merit, and in the event of any competitor being unable to take the trip the next fastest rider is to have the opportunity.
it goes without, saying that this ' year's Dunlop Timaru-Christchurch '/toad Race will eclipse any cycle ! event ever held in this colony, and litis even expected that hist year's enormous entry of 3f>o will be beaten. In cycling circles, from Auckland to the BlulT, the big event is tlm sole topic of conversation. The prize list is tiic richest ever offered, and the allotment as a'bove is sure to meet with the approval of the competitors. Of special interest is the .proposal to expend the whole of the entrance money in sending a team of, say, tho four fastest, men in the colony for the Australian race. The Automobile Club of Victoria has been fortunate in securing his Kxeellency, Sir Reginald Talbot, as patron of the club. His Excellency is an enthusiastic motorist, and already has one car in Melbourne. It is believed that two other fine cars will shortly bo landed to his order in Mel bourne. Private matters may keep Major and Mrs Taylor from getting away from Sydney on June fith proposed. to get
