Hen' A. Frunenthul is amongst the visitors staying at the Criterion Hotel. Messrs M. Orchard (Christchurch), U. Williams (Wunudiu), and F. Sherwood (Nelson) have been appointed drapery experts to the Customs Department. Air J. 1). Climie, of Wellington, succeeds Mr J. Langmuir as chief draughtsman in the local Crown bands Office, in consequence ol' the latter's promotion to the position of Commissioner for Taranaki. Private advices received in Gisborne state that Mr Bellerby, who has been missing from his home in Gippslan'd, Victoria, since the 31st inst., had suffered from a sunstroke some time ago. Hia brother and another well-known station owner lmvo left Gisborne for Melbourne, in the hope of being able to find the missing mail. The Marquess of Lansdowne (Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs) and Earl Spencer (Liberal) in the House of Lords, and the Might Hon. A. J. Balfour (Prime Minister) and the Bight Hon. Sir Henry CampbeilBannerman (Leader of the Opposition) in the House of Commons, in eloquent speeches, supported tlm Government's proposal to erect a national memorial fo the late Lonl Salisbury (late Prime Minister of' England) j n Westminster Abbey. Mr J.. Hedmoml protested, but the proposal was adopU-d without division.
