f®Tr. The forthcoming season will be the '* vJlWlee of the Canterbury Jockey Club, which was formed at a public L meeting held on November 4, 1854. The first race meeting took place on ->■ March' 6, 1855, at which £175 were distributed in stakes. •; Reduction—a daughter of Moderation—is an appropriately-named anis; mal racing in the Ashburton (prohi- : bition) district.
During the present season a profit t was made on all meetings held by , the Canterbury Jockey Club, with the exception of the one held in the summer, tho loss on which was less than in previous years. The expenditure for the season ended April 30 amounted to £44,052 2s 2d. The sum of £20,250 was paid in stakes, and £10,772 10s 8d to the new stand account. Salaries amounted to £1175 15s ; attendance at meetings, £1299 16s 4d ; Government tax, £2256 78 4d. The principal items of receipts during the year were : Totalisator, £14,435 4s 2d ; gates and lawn £9170 Is 4d ; nominations and acceptances, £5083 ; subscriptions £1299 18s, privileges, £2255 Ss 2d ; new stand subscribers, £2400. At the beginning . of the term the club had a credit balance of £l5O 19s Id, and on the 30th ult. had a debit balance of £8327 16s 6d, less unpresented cheques £147 2s 2s and £1 10s 5d petty cash in hand. The annual meeting of members of the club will be held on the 26th inst. Mr F. Martin, who has had to forfeit the Pahiatua Cup stakes (£130) through Benefactor being ridden in that'race' by an unlicensed jockey (B. Oliver) is at, present on a holi- ■ day trip to Germany, and may Wt 'know the result. until he returns. Fortunately, Mr Martin had £5 on the chestnut in the totalisator in the race, when he paid £26 18s.
