July 2—V.R.C. Grand National llurplechase. Gladsome is now given the very, lightest of tasks at Flemington. It is announced that she will not race again till the spring. The Auckland-bred Kilmarnock, by Simmer from Kilinorey, ran third in the Terruce Handicap at the V.H.C. April meeting.' Nominations for the Hawke's Hay Steeplechase and Hurdles race must be made on or before Friday. May i:i Dexterity was passed in at 383 guineas at the Falnierston North blood stock sales, and a bid of 25") guineas for the hurdler Midia failed to effect a sale. Avalanche showed what a wonderfully good pony she is by clearing right out from the field in the Autumn Handicap one mile at Avondale last week, ami winning by eight lengths. Gladsome is now an inmate of !•'. Macnamara's stable at Flemington. It is stated that Sir Rupert Clarke has decided on having La Carabine mated next season with Wallace. Flying Fox is in future to stand at a fee of SOOsovs, and will be limited to ten mares outside those of his owner, M. Itlanc. Sceptre cost 10,0011 guineas as u yearling. The well-known steeplechase and hurdle racer, Orient, died recently at Marlborough in his thirtieth year. North Taranaki horses received . several wins at the Haweru meeting, Alas and Toledo winning a double, while Durable, Full Cry, Land-o-Cakes, Paritutu and Park Shot had a win to their credit. Sandy won the two principal events at the Marlborough meeting. It is understood that the stipendiary stewards have received notice from the A.J.C. that there services will not be required after Aug. 1. Whether the system is to be abolished or new stewards appointed has not transpired. At the Sydney yearling sales. 1000 guineas were offered for a sister to Sweet Nell, but there being a reserve of 1500 guineas on her no sale was effected. Russley, a one-time well-known performer in New Zealand, died recently in New South Wales. The South Canterbury sportsman. Mr J. Meikle, has a very nice filly foal to Meliboeus from Lady Leah, and a three-year-old gelding by EuroClydon, from the same mare. In the cabled account of the sales of yearlings held in New South Wales last week it was stated that Sweet Nell's sister was passed in at 1500 guineas. It transpires that this was ' the owner's reserve, not the bidding made for the daughter of Hant Ilrion and Novelette 11. The last bid for the filly was 1000 guineas. With Machine Gun. Violden Lily. Treadmill, and Tessera to represent them, Canterbury owners hold a particularly strong hand in the Hawke's Bay Stakes.
