THE PURCHASE OF LANDS. MR SEiipON'S REPLY TO MR MASSEY.. • The Premier supplies the following statement in reply to recent utterances by the leader of the Opposition : "During the course of Mr Massey's in i\w South Island, lie made a. statement Unit for the purchase of lands under the Land of Settlements Act we were pledging (he lands of tlw colony to Ihe English money-lender. To this I rejoined that foe the last two years five whole of the money required for the purchase of lands under the Land for Settlements Act, had been obtained in the colony. Mr Massey replied that it was evident that for eight years the money had been obtained in the English money market, and that, he- was quite right; also Unit a return would prove that he was correctl ij.n his contention!, "To save Mr Massey any further anxiety, and to show that his statements cannot be relied upon, (he following information will be interesting :—Out of AM ,895,000 raised to March Mist, last for the purposes of land for settlements, including authorities under the Native Lund Purchase Act, 1802, only £300,000 was raised in London. The balance, i>i,595,000, has been raised within the colony. As Mr Alnssey, however, will probably address other meetings 1 desire, to make this information public, to prevent, him from making further mistakes.
