A return prepared by tho secretary of tho Harbour Hoard shows that in the 12 months ended March HI, 1903, 89,187 tons were imported, but in the twelve months ended March ill last, tho coal imports lu-
tailed 100,nOS tons, an increase of 11,318 tons or 12.7 per cent. The tonnage of general goods imported to Wellington duiv'.ng the 12 months ended March ill, 1901 amounted to 350,955, an increase of 5(5,501 over the quantity imported during the preceding twelve months. Advices received by the Health Department show that the plague patient in Auckland hospital has apparently passed the worst stage and there is every hope of his ultimate recovery. The arrivals in tho colony during March last numbered 3180 and tho departures 2753, compared with 3040 and 2762 respectively during March, 1903.
At tho Supremo Court to-day before Mr Justice Williams Daniel Morris and J no. Laurenson were Indicted on a charge of stealing ill from
John Brett Gunn at Polhitl Gully and on a second count for receiving sumo knowing, it to have been stolon. Prisoners pleaded guilty. There were several previous convictions against .Morris for various offences and only one for having unregistered doge ugainst Laurenson. His Honour sentenced Morris to two years' hard lahour and admitted Laurenson to 12 months' probation on condition that he pays 5s a week during that time, 01 which £7 is to be paid to prosed cutor and the balance to the Crown to assist in defraying the costs of prosecution. As Laurenson wus suited to have been addicted to drink for some time past the Judge directed that he should pledge himself to abstain from drink during the term of his probation or else be liable to come up for sentence.
