The Auckland Harbour Board's oil launch Kuaka, which was run down by one of the San Francisco mail steamers some time ago,has had the repairs to her hull effected. The engines of the vessel are in, the hands of the fitters, and the cabins and woodwork on the decks are being painted. The Auckland &tur says it will be some time yet tfefore the ve6sel : >ill be out of the contractors' hands. r rtw Nelson HarJjour Board estimate that they have enough money tin band to complete the proposed '""But through the Boulder Bauk and ■to construct the mole to at least 5 tb» length proposed by Mr Leslie BoynoM, and possibly for the whole length contemplated by the consult- ; fag engineers, Messrs Williams and ffiamoDtf The estimated cost of airing the "cut" is £24,000. \ survey has just been completed 1,1 ton a proposed ship canal connect- ; in# the Forth and Clyde. A similar rfcheme was put forward some years *»go, but was dropped owing to lack koI sufficient financial support. Now, however, that a naval base has been Vgafned additional importance, in View of its value from an Admiralas well as a commercial' stand- ; point, and it is expected that it would have the support of a Government subsidy. Commercially, the ' 'chief value of the scheme would' lie in making Glasgow an east-coast as well as a west-coast port, and in - effecting a great saving of time in , tiie North Sea trado with Glasgow. Two alternative routes have teen ■ eugglested—one via Stirling and ■ Loch Lomond; where the engineering would be comparatively easy, and the other in a direct line, affording saving of ten miles. The estimated cost of the latter scheme, whioh seems to be most favoured, is £lO,000,000.
