A Miraculous Escape.
The Cambridge correspondent of the K.Z. Herald writes :—A young man named Jolm Scott, captain of the local mounted rifles, met with an accident on Saturday. He was driving a four-horse laden with timber in the direction of Maungalautari, and when near what is known as the Crow's Nest a young calf met the waggon and ran in between the two leaders. The horses began to rear and plunge, and, breaking away from their fastenings careered down hill. The two shaft horses also got frightened and commenced to pull hard. In his endeavour to pull them up Scott was jerked on to the waggon pole while the horses were galloping heaKllong down hill. Scott managed to work himself backwards on the pole and throw himself clear, escaping with nothing worse than some nasty cuts on the face. A milk waggon was in front going the same direction and it is surmised that one of the leaders struck the wheel of the waggon in passing, for when found it .had sustained such serious injuries [that it had to be shot. The animal was valued at .C-10. Scott's escape was miraculous.
