A Pension Case.
In the S.M. Court on Monrtav, Mr Hutchison, S.M., heard a "case ajfja/inst .an old q/ge pensioner named Joseph Mfeirtln, in,\vhi(ch the department proceeded for recovery of a sum of £l4, alleged to have been overpaid to the pensioner through underestimates of values of propertv furnished. In 1901 Martin returned the value of his wife's real( estate «£ £l4O, while the fiovernment valuation was put at £290. The same figures applied to the succeeding year. Mr Banks conducted the case for the department, and Mr Ilutcliin appeared for Mr Martin. His Worship suggested that the case be adjourned to enable Mr Banks to communicate with (he Keg.istrar of Old Age Pensions. Mr Martin asked that his Worship should hear witnesses for the defence to save expense of further attendance. IJichard Price, a farmer at Egmont Road, stated he had Keen a Government valuer, and was acaccjuainted with Mrs Martin's property, the lessee's interest, in which he valued at not more than £l4O. Thomas Carman, farmer at Eginont Village, assessed Mrs Martin's interest in the leasehold held by her at a value of about £IOO to £12."). To Mr Banks : Witness lyased Id's valuation on what could be made out of the farm. In 1901 and 1902 the valuation was lower though the grazing tjuality of the land was then better. The case was adjourned for a week-
