Undesirable Characters.
(Per Press Association.) AI'CKLAXIi. April 11. Further evidence ni the presence of undesirable characters in Auckland has been [ui'iiisluil by two recent cases of garrotting. Jn the lirst instance a farmer "wa's walking up Wellesley-siivet and was set upon by a couple of men, who assaulted and robbed him. The latest victim of the garrotte is Mr Thomas Gresltam, city coroner, who, while returning home 011 Saturday night, was set upon opposite the Supreme Court, and was clutched by the throat from behind. A bag containing a Masonic apron and jewels was wrunched from his hand. Thinking soine friends were having a joke he offered no resistance till the man whipped from behind and began tugging at his watch and chain. Jle then seized the man, who was holding his throat, and shook himself free. Both robbers made oil with the Masonic insignia and gold chain, leaving a gold watch and sovereign case PALMEJISTON X., April 11. Geo. Gardner, John Aloore, and Hum Kee, charged with breaking and entering Uarraud and Abraham's warehouse and stealing tobacco and cigarettes, were remanded till Friday next. I'our cases of allege! burglary are pending against each accused.
