Borough Council.
The IWougjh Council met on Monday evenjiny. Present—His Worship the Mayor and Councillors Ahier, llrooking, Urowne, Carter Collis, Cliif, Medley, and Wilson. Air W. (J. Deal wrote offering to surrender sections in the Westown Park for Jiliio, provided he were allowed to use liulf the ground for n year.
Cr. Collis said the position now waft tbijl. Mr ]hvi;l would tuike JLIUI to go out now. 11 was decided to accept the written oiler, or the second one if permission were given by Thursday. Messrs (JoVeil und Quilliam recommended thai a testimonial be granted to tile retiring engineer, llr. ■Spencer. The recommendation was adopted. .Ur Armstrong applied for tho return of, XI Ms Oil deposit.— The Town Clerk said the money had been credited to Mr Armstrong's account, UelVri'ed to the Mayor for meiil, iiesideiits in Leech Street culled attention to the . fact thut work authorised in Leech Street, between Cameron and Clover Streets 4 had not been touched yet. Cr. Wilson thought that tho re. port should have slated that previous informations were dismissed.
Mr Stohr, the inspector, said he hud not inserted this l>eenußO hj« thought councillors would have read it in the press. The report was returned to thii inspector for this addition, and in Unit, form was adopted. The sanitary inspector reported two cases of enteric fever, ono In Clinic Street ami ono in Bullet Srteet. Other matters were also dealt with.—Revived.
The engineer, Mr Gibbon, asked authority to Obtain two tons of pig lead. He also l recommended laying water-mains in Cameron Street—' about 80 chains.
Four. chains of the main will lie laid at once, the balance being referred to the Works Committee. Tenders will bo called for supply* ing the lead.
The Works Committee report was l'ead.
Ct. lirooking moved that clause 2d li|e amplified to show that £ls authorised for protection works at the East End bathing shed was part of u previous vote, not new work.
' Cr. Ahier moved that instead of instructing the police to proceed against Air lioullon for, having washbuggy on tho-borough footpath on the iird instant, that the ollVnder l>e cautioned. It was a trivial offence, committed about live o'clock in the morning. Or. Clilf seconded, and on a division the clause was allowed to •stand. Ayes 'The Mu.vor and Cra Clili, Ahi«r, and Medley. Noes Crs Wilson, Hro-oking, Collis, Carter, and Browne. The report was adopted. The iicserves Committee report was withdrawn and the mailter of .Mi Knyg-dou's lease of sections in Westown l'nrk was referred to tho ii.-serves Committee for their report. Accounts were passed for pay-in.-nt. Cr. Ahier said the Council had bi vn chai'j'Ml for more gas lamps iluin were used. The Mayor said that four lamps wi re charged as eight, as they had to be kept burning all night., The Mayor produced the Town Clerk's draft of estimated and actual receipts and expenditure for. the past year. Cr. Mpdley complimented tho Mayor on the satisfactory state of the finances. Cr. Clill objected to tho finances being puMlicly discussed until the®; were reviewed by tho l'iiuuico Committee. In answer to Cr. Cnrtor, tho Mayor said that lie would brinjf down a detailed statement for discussion before he vacated the chair. Cr. Carter moved, according to notice, that no new business be taken after 10 p.m. ut Council meeting's. Mr ClilT seconded and the motion was carried. This concluded the business.
