Taranaki Agricultural Society.

A meeting of the sub-committee appointed by the Taranaki Agricultural Society was held on Saturday afternoon at the office of Mr, Samuel, when Messrs Samuel (Chairmun), N. King, 11. Okey. H, Kinff, - F. M. Mills, J. S. Corinett, J. C. George, S. Teed and C. Wells wer» present. Mr Samuel submitted e, longthy report on tho status and powers of tho society under the various Agricultural n!nd Pastoral Societies Acts. He also submitted particulars and plans of twoi si tea—each of about ten acres. One of these is at present part of thatpor-' tion of tho racecourse reserve lying to the east of the Avenue Road, of which he suggested that about 2J acres might bo vested in the borough as an endowment for rev-i eiuie or other purposes, for which the borough would doubtless relinquish their grazing revenue as from tho whole it-serve. Mr Samuel said an arrnjfetoment might be made by which tho society's land at SU Germain's Square fabout If acres> might be vested in the borough also, in exchange for tho ten acres east of Eliot Street either for revenue purposes or recreation as the Uorough Council might with the approval of Parliament decide. The result would bo that, if this could bo effected, the Agricultural Society would lose St. Germain's Sqjuaro and obtain in exchango ten acres ot the racecourse reserve freed from all rights, but would give up all it* rights if any to the remaining part of the racecourse reserve; the borough council would givd up its revenue from the racecourse reserve and would_obtain anjfiut 2i acros of it as a freehold for revenue or other purposes, and would also obtain tho whole of St. Germain's Square either for revenue, recreation or other purposes as the legislature might decide. Mr Samuel said that ho had no ilou'lfi that the Jockey Club, the* meivtlVers of which were for tho most partmem-hlers of , the Agricultural! .Society and were ai! interested in the) welfare of the district, would facili-.

tule the arruiKgiement and give up i\. rights over the 12J acres oas», of Rliot-streot ; but for his part ' he* (thought that it would bo far mo ra sutisftafctoryl if tho Act which wou i<| lie necessary to carry out ole0 le ar . rangiement were to vest tho remainder of tho racecourse in trustees, some to bo appointed by tb' e borough council, some by the Jo ckoy Club, and some by the Government, with an. obVigation to expenrj all revenut in improving and beautifying tho reserve as a sports, ground. Mr Sunt' uel also sifctmitted a 'plaji of 10 acres of tho Prison reserve at Moturo*, fronting the Breakwater road and Uarrutt ltoud, ami explained tho position nml the probable difficulties in (he way of obtaining that site. Aft. ler a lengthy disrussion .it was ft* solved that Mr .Samuel be rcqttcsted; to communicate with the Government so as to ascertain whether it would favour leirlstation f or the pur- | pose of vesting in the society the 10> acres of the Prison reserve, ami. if so, on what terms. Pending this being done and a reply received, it was decided that the general committee be requested not. to meet on Wednesday, the 13th Inst., as previously arranged, but to await a notice of meeting to be given by the mitokeemmittee
