Accidents and Deaths.
(Per Press Association). NELSON, April (». A shocking accident occurred on the steamer llaiipiri this forenoon. A deck hand, Carl KonifiTen, a foreigner, was bawling in a hawser when the vessel was mooring to the wharf, when the steel rope coiled round his lig'hf foot, taking the loot, clean oil at the ankle. His condition is precarious. CIIIIISTCIIUKCII, April G. Stanley McLcod Smith, aged eighteen years, employed as an olllco boy ami nii'Msenger by the local branch of the .Mutual Life Association of Australasia, was found about ten o'clock this morning in a vard at Ihe back ol the oilire with' a revolver shot wound in his forehead. A revolver was foil ml beside him. Iwo chambers of which were discharged. He was unconscious and was removed to the hospital, ami at present it is not known if the wound will pro\e fatal. Letters found on Smith indicate that he ptviiatlitulid self-des- < nut ion, and also the cause of the rash act. The police authorities decline to state what the cause Is, but, it is understood Smith was of a romantic turn of mind- and had been worrying over love matters, A skull found on the beach near Ihe mocn of the Wnimnkarii-i on Monday has been identified aa that of .lames Nolan, who was reported missing on January !th. His wife ami son nlcmilied the 'lend. Nolan was a veteran, and belonged to the 92ml Hegiment, and saw service- in the Cj'unea.
