An Unexpected Legacy.

The power of tho prcs6 is -once more ext;lii|>!ilioci in the sequel to the printing oi a paragraph, which recently appeared in the English newspapers. The paragraph was as follows "Mr C. White Mortimer, lJritisii Vice-Consul Las Angeles, California, writes asking for information I about a Miss Constance Mills, who, 'if alive, should be about twentyeiglvt years old. Her father, Major H. F. Mills, who was known at the time of his death as Major! H. F. Bulwer, died in California, leaving an estate worth £.10,000, and a will in favour of Mrs Uulwrfr. Miss Sonstauce Mills is a daughter by his first wife, and n®t bring named in the will, is entitled the law to half tho estaltie. Miss Constance Mills is alive, though no longer Miss Mills, but Mrs Woodeson, the wife of a Chester architect, residing at 2a Railway Road, Urmston. To her the paragraph brought news of her father's death, and also that a legacy of £SOOO was awaiting her in California. About eight years ago her father, a Majo* Mills, disappeared from England, none of his friends knowing whither he had gone. Tho ! last letter his wife received wasdati ed from St. Stephen's Club, London. The major was of a restlesa und roving disposition, and except that occasionally acquaintances in their travels met him in various . parts of the world, nothing was heard of him. He apparently set- • tied, however, in California, and ! the news of his death has come to i his relatives in the manner describ- , ed. His wife is still alive. Major i Mills formerly held a commission in , the Devonshire Militia, and he is i said to be distantly connected with ■ the Lytton family, which accounts I for his adoption of the name of Bul- ! wer while in America. He has a , brother holding a prominent public I position in Sal/ord.
