Lord Monk Bretton.
Among the passenger,s who arrived Irom Sydney by the Aloeraki was Loi-d Monk llretton, (1.1.!., the second baron of that name, ami lute secretary to the Right Hon. Mr Cliuinbwlain. The visitor has a seat in the House of Lords, and is the owner of <IOOO acres in the fair county of Sussex. He was formerly In the diplomatic service. Horn in JB(>i), and educated at Eton awl New College, Oxford, he succeeded his father 111 tiie title in J897. The lirst Lord was a member of ParlinmenL for some years, and was President of the Local Oovernment Hoard and and Chancellor of the Duchy of Luneasier.
Lord Monk Hretton, who, while in Wellington, is n guest, at tho Wellington Club, states that a wrong impression, presumably gained bv his recent association with Mr Chamberlain, has gone abroad as to the object of hj& visit to the colonies. !lt has been stated that he comes on a mission relating to Mr Ohnmberhiin's scheme of preferential trade. lie contradicts tWs. and states that he ceased his connection "it'll the late Secretary for the Colonies when Mr Chamberlain resigned Iroin the Cabinet.
