The Daily News. MONDAY, MARCH 21, 1904. THE MAIN TRUNK RAILWAY.
The Minister for Public Works bus at one time or another been subjected to a good 'deal of hostile criticism for the alleged slow progress uf work on the Main Trunk railway. From information supplied to the Waimate Witness by a local resident, a gentleman who has bivn successful in contract work, and therefore may be supposed to know something of what he is talking about, there really does not seem to be much cause for complaint. The gentleman referred to recently spent some time at Taihape, at which point the railway works are at present being carried out with considerable activity. The visitor naturally felt some interest in the progress of the work, and watched the methods employed very closely. He found no indication of the "Government stroke the men were, as he says, all toilers, and their daily records would b<! hard to heat by those in the employ of private contractors anywhere in the colony- 'ie men were working on "piece/'' and kept, up the pace without flagging j throughout the day. If this is a specimen of the energy being put into tiie whole of the works in connection with the line, and we have 110 reason to doubt that it is, then the grumblers should turn elsewhere for a subject on which to vent their splenitive ebullitions.
