OUR LETTER BOX.

(We are at all times willing to publish correspondence on matters of public interest, but it must be distinctly understood that we are not identilied with the letters of our correspondents.—Ed. Daily News.) BOItOUGH MATTERS. (To the editor.) Sir,—One by one, or rather, two by two, our councillors have handed in their resignations till we have a new council, to that elected at Jhe last election. In the list of the ntired ones are to be found the names of Messrs Tisch, Bellringer and Smith, and I believe that in these councillors the ratepayers hod some contidence. Whether they have been replaced by equal men yet remains to In- proved, but, thank goodness, there is one councillor who has stuck ; in his guns ritflii through, and that : is Councillor Wood. lie has been I alive to the interests of the ratepayers all along', and that is what we want. We want men who will employ and discharge the employees just as if they were paying their Wages out of their own pockets, ami the same spirit should guide them in the purchase of property, etc. But it is hard to get a whole council of such men. The ratepayers are to be congratulated on sending all available new blood in, and the new members have not been wanting in keeping an eye on the works in hand, j It is the new councillors whom uo elected who came to the people's rescue and remodelled the by-laws, and when it became obvious to them that much of the work was costing too much, and was unsatisfactory at thai, ihey brought the subject up unflinchingly, and they have at las l , placed matters on a better tooting before all the money is gone. As a ratepayer, I wish to heartily thank Councillor Wood for opposing the gi'.'df*of bonuses here m<i ihuv, and I -believe thai n.-.»s!; of he raJeare opposed to this sort of thing.—l am, etc., EAST WARD.
