The Daily News. MONDAY, MARCH 14, 1904. JUVENILE SMOKING.
la view of the recent convictions under the .Juvenile Smoking Suppression Act of last session, making it un offence for hoys under the age ot sixteen yours to smoke in public places, it is interesting to note that with the warm approval of theJ)uke of Fife and tho Archbishop of Canterbury, a movement has been started in England to call national attention lo the evils of cigareltesmoUing by children. A manifesto has been issued bearing the signature of many influential people, including the Karl of Meath, Lord Kelvin, Lord U'olseley, Mr Justice (jruntham, bishops and members of J'arliaiwnt, headmasters of many public schools, Major-General JJudeiii'owell, Dr. JJurnardo, and (lenerai Ho«»th, numerous clergymen and missioners, and an imj>osing list of medical authorities, including Mr .John Tweedy, president of the lioyal College of Surgetyis, to tiie etWct that "Jn view of the great increase of lute years in cigarette smoking among the >oung, it is felt that a strong expression .of opinion maybe of use in drawing national attention to u habit which is undoubtedly doing much to undermine the health und ruin the character of jminy Knglish boys in the various grades of society. Whether to to the public school boy or to the boy in Iho street, the evil is equally harmful, and we cannot too strongly express our hope that every possibly attempt may be made to deal with what we believe to be a very serious hin* drance to the young life of the nation. Arid we would specially emphasise the evident duty of parents to control their boys* in regard to this habit."
