INCREASING POPULATION.
A leaflet showing the movement of population has been issued by the Registrar-General, ami diseloses a very satisfactory state of affairs. In ihe' last three years the excess of arrivals in New Zealand over departures amounts to 25,789 persons, mosllv from the Home Country and Australia. The ligures are :—.1901. 0522 : for l'Ji)2, 7992 ; for .1903, 11,275. This is a gratifying position, and shows that Hie progress and prosperity of the colony are becoming increasingly attractive to outsiders year by year, a fact that is further accentuated when it is remembered I hut in 1900 the excess of arrivals over departures was only 1831. The natural increase by excess of births over deaths is ' also substantial, on account, the Regis' trar says, of the low death rale. The estimated population of the colony on ,'iee. 31, 1900, was 7iiß,2i"S, and ihe execs of bin lis over deaths number, d 12.3-1 11. On Dec. 31 last it- was csiimalrd that the colony (.excluding Maoris and people in the annexed Pncilic Islands) contained a population of 832.505, and the excess of births over deaths for the year was 13.301. This, added to the excess of arrivals for the year (11.275). gave a net increase in'the population of 2-1.576, more than 10000 above the figures for 1900. The mireases shown above are striking, and should form the subject, for co'ngratulatory comment all round
