High School Governors.
A special meeting of the High School Hoard was held last evening. Present—Messrs MacDiarmid, Hoy, Dockrill, J. E. Wilson, S. Percy. Smith and E. O. Allsworth. The first business was the election of a chairman, and Mr MacDiarmid proposed Mr S. Percy Smith for the position for the ensuing year, referring in eulogistic terms to Mr. Smith's fitness for the position. Mr Dockrill seconded. Mr Smith regretted that his position as one of the Royal Commission for the preservation of scenery, which would probably toko him away from New Plymouth a good deal for some time to come, made it impossible for him to take tho position. Mr Roy, speaking as the oldest member of the board, urged Mi; Smith to reconsider the matter. Mr Smith was sorry he was unable to do so as he was much intorestcd in the work of the commission and felt bound to give it his fullest at-' tenfion. , . Mr Dockrill said that under, the circumstances he would move that< Mr MacDiarmid be re-elected. Mr Allsworth said he was the youngest member of the board, but he thought it would be difficult to K«t u beth-r chairman thun Mr MacDiarmid, and seconded his nomination. After sevt'iul members had spoken in praise of Mr MacDiarmid's work us chairman, the motion was put by V live secretary and carried unanimously. Mr MacDiarmid took the chair and thunked the" members for their kind remarks but said he thought the position of chairman should go round. The principal (Mr E. Pridham, JI.A.) reported on various matters 1 and it wus resolved to supply more clubs, etc., and refund fees paid by Mr llroadmore, Ins son being entitled to free tuition. On the architect's certificate tha final payment was passed to Messrs Cliff Bros, on their contract for work done at the school. It was resolved that in fyture a member of the board accompany tho chairman on his monthly visits to tlie school. 'Die chairman and Messrs Roy and Wilson were appointed a comuiitteo to deal with any question which may arise in connection with Messrs Nowing and Hughes' leases. The board went into committee to consider the reorganisation of tho stall, hut on resuming made no report. Mr Hoy moved that tho mooting fixed for tho 25th Inst, bo not held, but that the board meet on April Bth.-Seconded by Mr Smith and carried. > Mr Allsworth then moved the motion of which he had given notice, viz., that a committee be appoint* ed, consisting of the chairman Mi S. Percy Smith and the mover, to consider ways aid means with a view to erecting or providing boarding accommodation for pupils at o* in connection with the New Ply. mouth High School, and report to tho board. Sir Allsworth spoke brlvfly in sup- ' port 01 the motion, saying that tha time lor discussion would be when Ihe report came to hand. Mr Wilson seconded the motion, and ulter a short discussion it was carried. Mr S. Percy Smith gavo notlco to move that the meetings in future t* held at -I p.m. This concluded tho business.
