OPUNAKE HORTICULTURAL AND . IiNDUSTRJAL EXHIBIT SOCIETY (From a correspondent). The second autumn show of the aoove society, which was roausura.ted about 18 months ago, was held on Wednesday. Fine weather pievailed and there was a large attendance of the public, who were unstinted in their praise of the exhibition, which was pronounced to l»e ahead of the shows usually seen on this- coast. The exhibition comprised" sections for pot plants, cut flowers, floral wort, vegetables, fruit, preservee, cookery and miscellaneous, and there was good competition in most of the classes of the various t sections. There were coiisideßaJdy over 400 entries. The display of pot plants was as usual a remarkably good one, better : "in fact than that of former shows. The most noticeable fcaUii\>s of this section were the begonias and pctunias.exhrbited by Mr Pill, who was the chief prize taker, the Rev. J. G. W, Ellis filling a rcspcctutble second place.- Amongst the cut blooms the effects of the severe storm of Saturday evening were very manifest; ne.veifcheless there was a good display . awl some remarkably fine specimens came forwaid. Tlte dahlias of Mr _ Frethey (Kaponga), the cannas of ilr Bungess (Warea), the phlox and diarrthua of Mrs Walker (Kaponga) not only outclassed the local stuff but were exhibits of first-lass mia- , lity. The Morshead Nursery Company had an excellent display of cac- ' tus, daMias, heaths, bouvaidias etc as well as some pots of coleii and adiaobnns, and was awarded a first-class certificate or merit from the society. - In the decorative floral section ™ r ? * er f *»ne excellent exhibits, E" ?£ °L the " rizCS **** «"waed by the Misses Pettigrew, whose .work section is %£ much admired.
