Out of eighty souls aboard, , "' fifii-two were drowned within three > miles of the shore. When it appeared certain the Clallam could not be ? savoi. a despaca-te effort was made ■ to take the women and children in r 5 in boats. The first boat, which Cap- [ tarn Lawrence, a Yukon pilot, volunteered to command, manned by P deck hands, went down within sight " of those on the Clallam. The second a. lifeboat, filled with male passengers, f. io •command of the second officer, * thivrm, was probably lost a few minutes later. From -aboard the Clallam -the watchers saw tho waves sweep the passengers from their hold on the seats and burl them into the water. They thought the lifeboat was rlgihted, .but diligent search has ' failed to find any trace ol it More passengers and members of the crew were lost when the third Ufcr- boat was swamped in an attempt to 1 launch it.
