The ominous clouds of yesterday broke tonlay at a quarter to twelve when light easterly rains fell. A'bout one o'clock the wind shifted to the north, after which the sum snone tiercely. The attendance at lirst was moderate, but after lunch it increased to about twenty tnousnnd when it was known in the city i hat play had commenced. Owing to Poster's illness Brauml took his place with Tyldesley to the bowling of Trumble and Hopkins, whose wickets were reversal yesterday. the former bowling from th& stand end. Runs camo very freely, both batsmen scoring from each bowler who tried on the theory that they scored equally. Tyldesle\\ principally nmde leg glances and pulls, but Brauml baited all round tho wicket. At 252 Saunders replaced Hopkins, and at 2<>9 Howell replaced Saunders. A change came oil at 277. Brauml spooning one- from Trumble, Ix'himl whom Howell simply waited and caught it easily. Knight's first appearance in a test match was disastrous, as after cutting Howell squaio to the off. a pretty stroke, he was clean bowled by Howell who took advantage of the biting and sticky wicket owing to the bright sun. Hirst folljbwed, but after making seven by streaky cricket he divw Howell to leg, but Xo'ble took a low down catch, falling over and eam-ing great plaudits. Khodos, who followed, only scored two, when Trumble had him leg before. When the afternoou tea adjournment was taken heavy showers fell. At 5 o'clock the umpires examined tlie wickets and shook their heads. The immense crowds mar vellously retained their patience, but eventually lost it. The spectators marched on to the ground and examined tiie wickets. They were escorted oil amidst groans by ten policemen, who were joined by five others. The umpires then removed stumps, amidst very loud groaning whfljeh. wob stopped by the iband playing the National Anthem. WELLINGTON, Jan. 2. , Canterbury finished off their innings this morning for 382—Bennett HQ, Prankish 10, Howell 19. , Hales got five wickets for 87, and Staples, 2 for 38.' The other bowlers were very expensive. Wellington did very well up to a certain point, as Gore played a nice innings of ol and then Tucker ami Staples put on nearly 100. The •former camo back to form in this match and made 65 in the style .which he sho-ved against the English team last season. Staples continued his good batting up north and contributed a steady 32. With four wickets down for 183 a follow-on seemed to be averted, but then thero was a collapse and eight wickets fell for 210. In the second innings Canterbury have lost two for 46. Lewis (not out) 24. Uphani hurt his leg yesterday, and could not bowl to-day. SOUTHLAND v. OTAGO. DUNEDIN, Jan. 2. Otago made a total of 310, Austin carrying his bet for 182 for two (hours and ten minutes' play. Southland's second - innings realised 19G. Wilson making 117 not out, in thrr-o hours' batting. Requiring 77 to win Otago ojxuied the second innings, and scored this number without the loss of a wicket. Otago won by ten wickets. WANDERERS v. OKATO.
The above match was played at Ok-ato on Friday and resulted in a win for the town team by 68 runs the scores being 87 and I*9. Hafieell 29 (not out), Braund 12, and Steeds 12 were the only batsmen to rcjaph doublje figures. Bnaund 5 wickets for 2 and Steeds 5 for 10 bowled throughout the innings. Goodwin and Tuigg bowled best for the country team. The town team speak very highly of the treatment received at Okato. A FATAL PICNIC TRIP. THREE LADIES DHOWNED, ■Per rrcss Association. From tlw meagre particulars at present available it seems that a party of ten persons, including tIV three deceased, (left in an express this morning for Tatigoio, and when crossing the i'e tan. 1 rive, which was considerably swollen by yesterday's heavy rain, the express capsize?, it is supposed through gvtting in a hole os quicksand. The stream was running pretty strong, and though several were fortunate enough to scramble ashore others were carried down the stream, the ladies -~'in:ed being drowned before ass., .ice could l>e rendered. At the tram inquest, Mr Mayhood, electrical engineer, representing the Brush Company, said that during the time the trams were running several smjnll defects 'had,been discovered, but not in the brakes. lie was r>f opinion that everything was in order on the double decker, which caused the a/tfident. To stop the car running back down hill would be to restart tiw far forward.
