Axemen's Association
CARNIVAL AT ELTHAM. (By our Special Reporter.) The New Zealand Axemen's 'Association's third annual carnival commenced at Eltham on Boxing Day. The Association was formed nearly four years'ago,'in order to encouragie the sport of chopping and stiwing. Thanks to the energy and wholehearted interest shown from the start by the various officials, more especially the erstwhile sprinter aii'd now very popular secretary Mr F. E. Hardy, the Association has ably fullfilled : :(i|tis pu.rpose, as the great gathering on Saturday went far to ,R r 9yP... Not only competitors, but spectators, too, attended from almost every part of the colony, and, to the credit of Eltham let it be said that the crowd included hundreds of the local people. Since last year tho enclosure has' been enlarged, the stand accommodation increased, the provision for sawing considerably improved and the meeting extended to a two days' affjair.i I(n order to obvialfe the (n|3cr essity for the long waits which rather spoilt the sports on previous occasions, the management ndded running and cycling events to the programme, and the bill-of-fare provii dod was one that proved most interesting to_ all those present. The daj( was beautifully fine, and., the outing was much enjoyed by about , three thousand people. Competition ' in all cases was splendid, the close finishes being most exciting and a 1 credit to the ha-ndicappers, Messrs 1 H. Wolfe (chopping and sawing) and 1 T. C. Stanners; (athletic events). , The bijg event of Saturday was the j New Zealand Championship Chop, j of £lo' and gold medal.
