It is the intention of the Education Department to hold a first examination for junior national scholarships in New Plymouth on Tuesday and v\udnesd'ay, Jan. 5 and 6. Ths examination is to be held in the subjects Of the fifth standard, tund is open to boys and girls who are not over 14 years of age an Dec. 31, who have been under regular instruction ait a public school in the colony for the three years ending December, 1903, who bavs'for the last six months been under regular instruction in the subjects of the fifth standaiid or a higher standard at a. pub-, lie school in trhw district, and who aie certified by the teacher of the school as being eligible for " and having a reasonable chance of obtaining" a scholarship. No scholarship will be awarded to any person whose parents are in receipt of an income exceeding £250 a year. The value of each scholarship is £lO a year, in addition to the amount of tuition lees payable at the secondary school, and, if the holder is obliged to live away from home, he will receive an additional allowance of £3O a year. The term of each scholarship is thiije years, subject to faithful observance of the prescribed conditions ; and, with the approval of the Minister, the Boai'd nvajf eatend the term of any scholarship by one year. Subject to the necessary qualification of candidates, at least one scholarship will be aeserved for schools having a yearly average attendance oi' hot more than 40, and another for schools haying- a yearly average of more than 40 but not more than 200. No school can gain more than one scholarship. Entries tor examination must reach the Board by noon of Saturday, the 19th last. By advertisement it will be seen that full particulars are obtainable from the Secretary of the Education Department, and "we hope that Taranaki will send up nmnv candidates, and that the result of the examinations will be a credit not only to the boys and girls, but to Una district in which we live.
