Tho strawberry growers at Birkenhead and liirkdale, Auckland, are sufferers through tho ravages of an insect (the Odondrea Zealandia), which has been destroying th» plants. One settler estimates his loss 'through this pest at the rate of 10,000' plants during- the past month.
At the Jefferson Ironworks, Ohio, according to t'lve Scientific American, a new composition lias recently been tried which is said 'to have remarkable effect in welding scrap steel. This 1 scrap in any convenient size or sKaipe, is placed layer upon layer, with the composition between, after which heat aind mechanical pressure are applied, the result being a homogeneous union of the several parts. A billet of steel thus made was put through the furnace and rollocl into a sheet, after which the metal was cut up into smaller pieces l'ronn which nails and washers were lmaide. These were found to be of excellent cjuality. The cost of making the billet of steel, including the new composition and the labour, is from 25 to 50 cents per ton.
The Opuiiake Times report# a chapter of accidents : —The Infant daughter of Mr Wi Gilmour/ t>( Rahotu, i'el 1 off a chair on which she lvad climbed on Monday last amid dislocated her s'hjoul'der. A little daughter of Mrs McNiccol, of I'ihama, was brought into Opunake and found to be Suffering from a dislocated hip. Or' Wednesday Mr Toslaiid, who was bushfalling on his land oil the Arawhata road, got pinned by ii falling tree, and received rather serious injuries l . He received a nasty jaggied wound on the forehead which tore his eye-brow away, exposing the eye. Hfc had also one arm hurt and got a severe crushing generally. A horse that was about to' be 'harnessed into a trap threw himself down. A bystander, to cure the brute of his evident sulkiness, drew several coils of a light rope around his nose. The horse died.
Upon enquiry the Otago Daily Times learns that little reliunce need be placed on thfe statement published on the authority of the Christchureh Press, that fiussian and American poultry exporters have secured the control of the South African market—their goods being preferred to those of New Zealand. Against this statement leading poultry exporters in the colony explain that the South African demand is heavily in excess of supplies obtainable, and the importers are prepared to pay better prices /or New Zealand poultry (Government graded) than for similar produce l'rom elsewhere. It seems strange that on the face Of the well-known fact that lor months Ijuck the colony has had standing orders for tens of thousands of birds which it has been impossible to fill that reports such as that referi<ed to should gain eurrency. The real fact of the matter is that it is owing to New Zealand poultry produco being unobtainable tihat the Kuspian and American product finds a place in tho South African market.
