The Ramwa sailed from Onehunga at 4.20 p.m. yesterday for New Plymouth. Ther« was a heavy 'gale at Russell on Monday night, and yesterday morning the' sea was rough at Tiritiri, heavy at Cape Maria Van Diemen and Ca®tlepoint and smooth elsewhere.
A new dredge for the Westport Harbour Board has arrived at Wellington. The vessel, which is a pump dredge, the bucket system having been discarded, is named the Eubi Seddon. The Union Company's steamer Takapuna goes on tho patent slip at Wellington to-day for cleaning and painting. The schooner Annie Hilll timber laden, made a smart passage of four days frpm Kaipajra to Wellington last week. A report from Messrs MailTer and Querciiu, of New Yorki states that as freight rates by steam to ail ports are low, there is no indication of any reduction in freighting at present. Sail rates also continue very low, considerably under charter coyt, but it is not considered there is any probability of there bping further reduced. The tmly sailing vessel under chart for Xew Zealand is the Amsterdam. It has been decided (says an exchange) that the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company's new steamer, the Matatua will be launched in December. She is being built at the yards of Messrs Workman, Clark, and Co., of Belfast, and will be ready lor sea in January or February next. She will be practically a Matatua of the old type and a Hainan combined, and is to be 7000 tons register. She will have no passenger accommodation, but will have frozen meat capacity- for about 90,000 carcases.
It is stated that Captain Kiddle is to have command of the New Zealand Shipping Company's recenlly Jjuilt steamer Kaipara on her maiden trip to New ZJealaml. It is expected the vessel will leave London about December sth.
