-THE STRANDED OIL STEAMER. MELBOURNE, Nov. 30. Several unsuccessful attempts were made to tow the Pettiana off. Her position is now regaidod as hopeless-. The vessel, which was in charge of a pilot, went ashore with such force that her plates were split' from stem to 'midships, a?id her forefoot was gripped by the jagged rocks as in a vice. It is believed the machinery was smashed in the shock of the'impact. The vessel now lies broadside on to the sea. Tons of crude oil, which escaped from the ship, kept the breakers down for miles around. The crew got safelv (ashore. The PetrianfL wreck has been abandoned. ANOTHER STEAMER ASHORE. ADELAIDE, Nov. 30. The steamer Somerset Is aground Bt Port River. Although a consdderftWe quantity of cargo was lightered, it was expected that owing to the state of the tide she' would not floaV till to-morrow. THE THORNLIEDANK. pec. 1, 111 a.m. SYDNEY, Nov. 20. The whole of the Thornliebank's cargo has been discharged and Iho yessel docked for repairs.
