An instance of the injustice accruing from the operation of some of the regulations of the Public School Teachers' Salaries Act, 1901, was supplied nt yesterday's meeting' of the Education Board. The New Plymouth School Committee forwarded a communication strongly urging the Board to bring under the notice of the Education Department the hardship which was being inflicted upon the second assistant master ol the Central School. Under the new -classification the salary attached "to this position was cut down from £l7O per annum to £l3O, and the committee made a suggestion that, in order to induce the teacher to remain—as he was a valued member of the staff, but could hardly 'he expected to continue at such a reduced figure—a junior pupil teacher might be dispensed with, and his salary (£3O) added to that of the master. This may 'lie the only way out. ; of the difficulty, and possibly justified ill this case ; but it seems an absurdly poor expedient. Moreover, it can hardly render the position- of the teacher in question a , pleasant one, seeing that it is the subject of such sordid—though wellmeant—discussion. Members of the , Board were favourably disposed towards the suggestion, antl it is intended to bring the whole question ' under the notice of the Department.
