OUR LETTER BOX.

(We are at all times willing to publish correspondence on matters of public interest, but it must be distinctly understood that we are not identified with the letters of our correspondents.—Ed. Daily Noavs.) SPORTS GROUND FOR NEW PLYMOUTH. (To the Editor.) Sir,—ln your leading article a few days ago there appeared an appeal to the Recreation Grounds Board re the. necessity of making a racing track in those beautiful grounds of ours. We have not had a cycle or foot race in New Plymouth or near by foe some time, nnd 1 notice by the papers that the Friendly Societies' Annual Picnic committee have drawn up a programme of cycle and running events to be run at Sentry Hill on Now Year's Day. I have no doubt the public will not only' attend the meeting to show they approve the action taken by the committee, but also to provide prizes for the events. The picnic last year, held at the same p'ace as this year's is to be, was a great success , and there is not a belter place to hold a'•picnic or social gathering of any sort than Mr Sampson's. I hope the public will attend in large numbers, and prove to the Recreation (■round Board the necessity of having a sports ground in New Plymouth. The track should be made in Uu; v ßecreation Grounds, as a better "place could not be found for miles around. Trusting you will forgive me for taking up so large a space in your valuaible paper,—l am. etc., GOOD HONEST SPORT. FIRE INSURANCE RATES. (To the Editor.) Sir,—ln answer to "Insurer's" letter in your issue of the 24th inst., I would ask you to state that resolutions with regard to the above have been forwarded to the propor quarters, and that the matter has by no means been lost sight of.—l am, etc.. HICKMAN F. RUSSELL, Sec. Tradesmen's Association, New Plymouth. WANTED : A PUBLIC SPIRIT. (To the Editor). I Sir,—A few short months ago there were growing indications that the lethargy in public matters, which appears to be very characteristic of this community, was passing away, and that a revived Interest in ■borough affairs was to be the order ol 1 the day. How speedily this fond hope has been dashed to the ground is evidenced by the fact that not a single nomination was received today for the West Ward vacancy. In order that residents in this 'ward may have a further opportunity of securing a representative, mote of the money is to be spent,in advertising an extraordinary vacancy Although not resident 'in the Wes-t Ward 1 would like to point out. the position in which it may now be placed. First, there is no one to lake Mr Alexander's place ; second !Mr Edmunds is .shortly removing l mm New Plymouth, which will create another vacancy, whilst the absence ol Mr Tisch on an extended ho .day next year may mean that Hie West Ward will be wholly unre-lu-esented i„ the Council.
