A Russian Tragedy.

The people of Moscow are much excited by the recent trial of a young Englishman named Alexander Carr, who about a year and a -haK ago murdered his mother and two sisters under peculiarly atrocious circumstances. The young man, who had been sentenced to twelve years' hard labour in the mines, is the son of the manager of a brewery at Khamofnike, a suburb of Moscow, and famous as being the residence of Count Tolstoi. This terrible tragedy, which has already cost the life of three persons, all arose in consequence o* the above-mentioned young man falling in love with a Russian girl named Smernoff, whose aequainrance the young Englishman made at some dancing lessons. In order to take this young person out, and provide her with amusement, the reckless young man commenced to rob his mother. On being discovered by the latter, who threatened to complain to the young man's lather, Carr, without further ado, muixiered his parent there and then with an axe, and his two sisters immediately af-tenvai-ds. It is related that when the murderer lifted this weapon over the head of the youngest sister she fell on her knees imploring for mercy, but the young man, mad with passion, showed no mercy, and killed her also. On being first arrested, and tried for this offence, the jury came to the conclusion that the man was insane. He was therefore confined in a lunatic asylum ; but his conduct whilst there led the authorities to suppose that they ihad not to do with a madman, but with a very dangerous criminal, who would stick at nothing to attain bis ends. During his confinement at the lunatic asylum, Carr showed his sanity by making his escape. In order to eftect this he made the attendants all intoxicated, as well as the man who attended him during his walks. He Then hired a carriage and drove away alter supplying himself with new c othes. The want of a passport, however, eventually led to the joung man's arrest and trial.
