Borough Council.

The ordinary meeting of the Borough Council was held on Monday. Present—His Worship the Mayor (Mr R. Cock), Crs. Brooking!, Wood, Bellringer, Burgess, Collis, Carter, Tisch, and Edmunds. EAST END BATHING SHED.

The Harlbour Board wrote agreeing to a request for permission to remove stone from in front of the proposed site of the East End bathing shed. ARIKI STREET. The Mayor suggested that instructions be given to have plans prepared for removal of the earth in Ariki street. Or |!ellinnigf r moved that r,he Board be in ormed that the Counci, will remove the spoil on condition that tho Board pays £lO and allow the Council to use a small piece of the land on the bank of the Huatold by Gill Street. Cr.Collis seconded and after some little discussion this was carried. The Committee who formerly had in hand negotiations with the HarbcWßoard were deputed to agajn intervlewetl the Board. A CONTRACTOR'S TROUBLES. Wm. Armstrong, contractor for certain works in the Council, forwarded four letters relating to the unsuitability of plans and trouble he had in endeavouring to carry them out. He also sent a bill for moneys he considered due to him. The letters were ordered "to lie on the taliae. WATER RIGHTS. The Council went into Committee to consider a letter from Mr Gledhill, who was also present, regarding) toe price of a piece of land reojuired (5 acres 1 rood 15 perches) for wat-er-works purposes. After a lengthy conference the Council resumed, and it was reported that Mr Gledhill had agreed to accept £2OO and a supply of water for pastoral purposes in two paddocks on Avenue Road. ENGINEER'S REPORT. The Engineer reported on the progress of contracts and various l works going on. KING STREET CULVERTS. The Engineer was instructed to prepare plans for a concrete culvert across the Mangotuku stream in King Street. The Engineer . pointed out that there was an awkward angle in the adjoining property, the apex of a triangle jutting out into the roadway and coming right into the centre of the archway of the culvert. On the Mayor's suggestion, it was decided that the owners of the property be interviewed regarding th* position before the plans are prepared. The Council will view the ground on Wednesday. LEACH STREET. The Engineer's report on the opening up of Lpach Street, which would be particularly useful to divert cattle traffic from the Powdorhuxn St. bridge would cost from £6O to £BO. The matter was deferred for the present. CAMERON STREET. Instructions were given for metalling being continued to Kookes' gate, footpaths, etc., to bo also made, in Cameron St. WEYMOUTH STREET. Concrete kertojng and channelling in Weymouth Street was authorised. BOROUGH INSPECTOR'S REPORT The Inspector (Mr Stohr) reported on the general condition of the town. HEALTH. The Sanitary Inspector reported two cases of infectious diseases.--Scarlet fever. It was decided that the Inspector have the King Street urinal completed according to plans prepared. ADVERTISING. The Mayor reported on the result of interviews with the newspaper proprietors regarding ' advertising charges. It was considered that th» cost might be l educed by inserting statutory advertisements in the papers alternately, each being given an equal share. This was adopted. WORKS COMMITTEE. This report, as already reported, .was adopted. BYE-LAWS. The bye-laws committee's report, dealing with the baths, was adopted. MR OKEY'S CLAIM. The committee set up to iniqjuire into a claim by Mr .H. Okey for sheep lost from the abattoir site reportfd that it had been agreed to nccopt £8 in settlement of rent to, Dec. 3rd, Mr Okey to have the ground rent free from that date till the Council takes the land over, the 'Council to have no further liability for sheep lost. The report was adopts. AVENUE ROAD. The Jockey Club having (vrreed to pay half cost of encroaching noxious weeds on the Avenue Road, the Club to keep the furz down In future. It was decided to agree to this. The Council rose at 10.45 p.m.
