Dr. Mason, Chief Health Officer, was a passenger by the express from Wellington on Saturday, and left by the Takapmiu that evening for Auckland.
A press l telegram informs us that Mr Henry Soton Scott (bettor known under the nom de plume of " H. S. Merriman"), novelist, died from appendicitis.
That old and esteemed colonist and explorer, Captain Jackson Barry, has been again laid aside with rheumatic fever, but he has so far improved as to be able to get about a little, ,and his medical adviser has ordered him away to Rotorua as soon as he is able to leave. Captain Barry is now nearly eightysix years old.
Lieutenant-Colonel H. G. Payne, Major Matthew M'Credie, V.D., ami Captuin (Adjutant) Sydney N. Muir, of the New Zealand Field Artillery Volunteers, have been placed on the retired list. Major M'Credie, who is now in Gisborne, was for many .years in command of the 1). Buttery Wellington.
