OUR LETTER BOX.

(We are at all times willing to publish correspondence on matters of public interest, but it must be distinctly understood that we are not identified with the letters of our correspondents.—Ed. Daily News.) THE DEFUNCT LICENSING BILL. (To the Editor.) Sir,—Tho letter in your columns on Thursday by "Thorough" is a specihiah, alas, of too mauiy articles of a like nature in our local papers by nom de plumes, who find it a cheap and nasty way of venting their spleen on those who differ from them.

" Thorough's" object Is evidently to set s«ct against sect by denouncing the principles and actions of the Nonconformists, whose teachings on the Ikfuor traffic question are antagonistic to the pocket interests of & certain closfeooff f the . community. His -quotation of Isaiah to show that strong drink is a blessing (the prophet, no doubt, had his eye on quality .quantity, and prices properly regulated) is the very reason why the moderate party, who hold the balance of power, voted largely with the No-License party, in order to remove the present unjust and unsatisfactory private monopoly, with £ts greed of gain. Once rid of this monstrous monopoly in a democratic country, the State would and could conduct the trade free from the hundred and one existing abuses. As long as those who have one drop of the milk of human kindness see their fellow creatures rendered physicnl and moral wrecks from want of the proper regulation of a dangerous article, so long will they continue to fight, conscious of having the power that maketh for righteousness on their side.—l am, etc., ROBERT GLEGG.
