Warner, after inspection o( the wicket, decided, when he won the toss, to put the local men in. Duff and Trumper opened to Hirst ivnd Rhodes, both batsmen getting Quickly into double figures, and punishing Hirst on the leg side. Both bowlers were treated impartially, and at 35 Arnold relieved Rhodes. Duff played his third ball on to tne wicket, the bails were not dislodged. Arnold's next ball he touched into Lillej's hands—l for 35. Noble was next to go in. Trumper playing freely the half century soon appeared. Noble, who shaped feebly, tipped Arnold into Lilley's hands, who held it at the second attempt—2 for 55. Hopkins followed. Arnold at this time had taken two wickets for nine
Trumper hitting- Rhodes, who replaced Hirst, vigorously, then played forward to Rhodes, and Lilley stumped him—3 for 67. Rhodes' average stood at 1 for 32. .S. Gregory followed, but after a single was added he lost Hopkins, who was neatly taken in the slips by liraund—l for 68. Kelly was the next man, but only made a couple when Tyldesley at mid-off caught Iviui—s for 74. Rhodes improved his average with 3 for 34.
Howell opened with a hit out of bounds, following up by putting the same bowler out of the ground, then mishit him and Arnold caught him. After lunch the two Gregorys were partnered. Syd. was slowly getting into double figures by occasional pretty leg glances, and when warmed scored freely, and the century appeared as the result of an hour and a-half's play. C. Gregory went out to Rhodes and Lilly stumped him—--7 for 107.
Hicks on followed, and Gregory sent one dangerously near Foster who failed to get hold of it. The newcomer without scoring gave Warner a chance at point, which was accepted—B for 108.
Fisher arrived just in time to see Lilley smartly catch Gregory— 9 for
Mcßeath, the last man hut Fisher was caught without addition to the score.
